5 Signs Your Drains Need Professional Cleaning

Nobody thinks about their drains — until they stop working. By the time a drain is fully clogged, the problem has usually been building for weeks or months. As a licensed master plumber serving Utah County, I want homeowners to recognize the early warnings, because catching a drain issue early is a $200 fix. Catching it after a sewage backup is a $2,000 mess. Here are the five signs to watch for.

1. Water Drains Slower Than It Used To

The most common — and most ignored — warning sign. A tub that takes 30 seconds longer to drain, a sink that pools while you wash your hands, a toilet that rises higher before flushing down. Slowness means buildup, and buildup only gets worse. This is the ideal time to call, because a professional drain cleaning at this stage is fast and inexpensive.

2. Gurgling Sounds From Drains or Toilets

If you flush a toilet and the shower drain gurgles, or a sink drain burps and bubbles, air is trapped somewhere in your drainage system. That usually means a partial blockage in a shared line — often deeper in the system than a household plunger can reach. Ignoring it typically leads to backups in the lowest fixture in the house.

3. Bad Smells Coming From Drains

Kitchen drains that smell like rot are usually coated with grease and food debris that never fully washes down. Bathroom drains that smell like sewage suggest something further down the line. Store-bought chemicals mask the smell for a day and damage your pipes doing it. A professional cleaning removes the actual buildup.

4. Multiple Drains Backing Up at Once

This is the big one. If your tub backs up when the washer drains, or every fixture on the lowest floor of your home starts acting up together, the problem is in your main sewer line — not any single fixture. Stop using water and call a plumber the same day. Main line backups in Utah County are often caused by tree roots invading older clay or cast iron laterals, especially in established Provo and Orem neighborhoods.

5. Water Backing Up in Unexpected Places

Flushing a toilet and seeing water rise in a nearby shower or tub is a plumbing emergency in progress. So is water backing up into a floor drain in the basement, garage, or utility room. Turn off water use immediately and call a professional.

Why Store-Bought Drain Cleaners Don't Fix the Problem

Liquid drain cleaners are caustic, they only chew through a small opening in an existing clog, and they eat away at pipe walls — especially older galvanized and cast iron lines common in older Utah County homes. They mask the symptom and shorten your plumbing's lifespan. Professional cabling or hydro-jetting actually removes the buildup and restores full flow.

How Often Should Drains Be Cleaned?

For most Utah County homes, a preventative main line cleaning every 2 to 3 years is a smart investment — especially if there are mature trees on the property or the home is more than 30 years old. It's dramatically cheaper than the water damage from a surprise backup.
